NEW YORK — Oklahoma senior quarterback Baker Mayfield was the runaway winner of the Heisman Trophy Saturday.
What Mayfield could not do during his junior year in Ames was escape from Iowa State linebacker and former Perry standout Kane Seeley, who can now boast he sacked a Heisman winner for a loss of nine yards.
Seeley had eight tackles (three solo) in the Nov. 4, 2016 game at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, which was telecast nationally in prime time by ESPN. He finished his senior season tying for the team lead in tackles with 78.
“It felt great, and I was happy I made the play for my team,” Seeley said of the sack afterwards. “I was close to him a couple of times earlier and it was just rewarding finally making the play.”
Seeley appeared to enjoy facing the Sooners in his collegiate career, as he had seven tackles and forced a fumble as a junior in 2015.
The former Bluejay all-stater was a four time Big 12 All-Academic selection, making the first team as a freshman, junior and senior. As a senior he was a national semifinalist for the Campbell Trophy, considered the “Academic Heisman.”
Seeley and one-time roommate and Cyclone placekicker Cole Netten were the only members of their recruiting class to appear in every quarter of all 48 games in their careers.
Seeley and wife Hannah live in Colorado, with their beloved French bulldogs Obi and Binks, who have established their own social media following.
