REDFIELD – Following reports from concerned citizens about a stench near an unnamed creek east of Redfield, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has begun an investigation of a possible discharge to the creek, a DNR spokesperson said Tuesday morning.

DNR staff found material seeping from an old tile line to the creek, which was creating both the odor and a milk-grey color in the water of the creek. The discharge appears to have been ongoing since July, according to citizens’ comments to the DNR.

The DNR said the discoloration and odor “exist along the creek until its confluence with the South Raccoon River. No impacts have been observed in the river.”

DNR staff is currently working to identify the source of the discharge, and nearby public water supplies have been notified.

The DNR advises people and pets to avoid contact with water in the creek.
