Cancer has touched virtually everyone, as the Perry Kiwanis Club learned at their Tuesday luncheon at the Hotel Pattee when they welcomed guest speakers Gary Iles, co-chair of the Northern Dallas County Relay for Life, and Kate Knudsen, American Cancer Society Relay for Life community manager.

Sponsored by the American cancer Society, Relay for Life raises about $5 billion annually for cancer research, according the Knudsen. Last Sunday’s third annual Relay for Life for Northern Dallas County bike ride will be matched Saturday, Sept. 18 with the fall relay event at Perry High School’s Dewey Field.

Iles said this year’s goal is to raise $25,000.

Knudsen said she works with seven Relay for Life groups, helping the chairs organize events in the Perry, Winterset and the Des Moines area.

Perry Kiwanian Bob Nevitt, a member of the Perry club since May 2, 2000, welcomed the visitors on behalf of the membership.
