The repaired base of the Civil War monument in Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry looks nice from a distance.

Many of you might remember the story that I wrote a few weeks ago about the condition of the Civil War monument in Violet Hill Cemetery. Representatives of the Perry Historic Preservation Commission assured us in their comments to the story that work on the monument was to come.

They were correct. Work has been done on the monument.

I first noticed some supports around the monument when I was driving by Oct. 12. There was also a crew working. I told the leader of the crew that I wanted to take some pictures of the monument, and they moved because they really did not want to be in the pictures.

It is funny how people do not want to be in a picture but later will check it out to see if they got in the picture. Then they are disappointed that they are not in the picture.

The crew leader asked me what I knew about the monument. I told him what I knew. He said the new base around the monument had been poured in two stages. He told me that they put supports in the cement and that it should hold up a long time.

“Come by tomorrow to check it out,” he said.

I did go back the next day and saw the forms around the base. I again visited the monument Oct. 22 and saw all of the work that had been done. It looks really good.

At last we know the question posed on the monument: “Will future generations prize the sacrifice that our comrades have made?” For the next 120 plus years, the answer will be yes.

I also heard that the Perry Historic Commission could use some more help to pay for this $30,000 repair. Donations can be sent to: Perry Historic Preservation Commission, P.O. Box 545, Perry, Iowa 50220. You can also give your donation to any member.

With Veterans Day this weekend, it would be the perfect time to help with your donation to this project. I am going to send in my donation.
