An asphalt overlay will be applied to the 21-mile stretch of Iowa Highway 144 between Perry and Grand Junction starting this week. One-lane through traffic will be maintained during the five-week project.

Travelers between Perry and Grand Junction will want to give themselves extra time to get to their destination once planned road work begins on Iowa Highway 144.

The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) hopes to start an asphalt overlay project on Highway 144 between the two towns this week. The start date has already been delayed two weeks due to rainy weather.

Utility work will be done first, and then the road surface will be milled down and a four-inch asphalt overlay will be laid. The overlay will be done in sections, and the road will remain open for one lane of traffic while each section is overlain.

Motorists are advised to watch for pilot cars and be prepared to stop for flaggers.

The project is expected to take eight weeks, depending on weather, according to the DOT. The cost of the road work is $5.9 million.

The DOT also plans to resurface Highway 4 (Elm Street) in Jefferson from Lincoln Way north to U.S. Highway 30 starting Monday, July 30.

  1. Thank you for the reporting of this. Also, could you look into the resurface of U.S. Highway 169, which I believe is scheduled for this summer also?
