Richard L. Carstens, 62, of Waterloo and formerly of Perry died at his home Saturday, Aug. 25 in Waterloo, Iowa.

He was born Jan. 22, 1956, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Bill and Lois Carstens.

Rick graduated in 1974 from Perry High School.

He married Karen J. Thoma on Nov. 6, 1976.

Rick loved watching his grandchildren grow, marking their height on a closet door with each visit. He enjoyed watching sports, especially Iowa football.

He is survived by his wife, Karen; a son, Tom; two brothers, Mike and Jeff; a sister, Kerry; and two grandchildren, Ava and Evan.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 at the Thoma Farm at 3223 E. Donald St. in Waterloo. There will be a cremation, with no funeral planned immediately.

Memorials may be directed to his home at 1728 E. Ridgeway Ave., Waterloo, IA 50702.

  1. My grandpa meant the world to me. I hated the day that my father told me that he had died. More info: Me (Ava) and my little brother (Evan) had to stay over at family. I was very confused and concerned about why we had to go. I asked my mother where my dad was. All she said was “Your dad is gone,” which made me even more worried. I miss my hard-earned very, very much.
