Rider dies when deer crashes through windshield

The fatal car-versus-deer collision occurred in the eastbound lanes of U.S. Highway 30 at Q Avenue in Tama County Sunday evening.

A Walford, Iowa, woman was killed about 5:15 p.m. Sunday when the vehicle in which she was a passenger struck a deer while traveling east on U.S. Highway 30 near Tama.

Donna Kathleen Smith, 57, died when the deer “went through the windshield and struck the passenger,” according to a report by the Iowa State Patrol.

Amy Kathleen Smith, 24, of West Des Moines was driving the 2008 Toyota Rav4 when the accident occurred at Q Avenue. Amy Smith was not injured in the mishap.

Donna Smith was transported to the Hrabak-Neuhaus Funeral Home in Belle Plaine.

The incident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.

The Tama County Sheriff’s office, Chelsea Volunteer Fire Department and Toledo Police Department also responded.
