DES MOINES — Wins in four of eight individual events and in two of three relays powered Perry past both Des Moines North and host Des Moines Hoover in a girls swimming triangular Tuesday.

Points were awarded only to the top three finishers in each event, with Perry amassing 41 points while North finished with 32 points and Hoover with 20.

Jayette head coach Jean Dowd said she was “beyond proud” of the effort her team displayed.

“It is just positives all around,” Dowd said. “Several girls have already hit their early-season target times and others had solid times, too. I guess those early-season three-hour workouts have started to pay off.”

Senior Haileigh Kenyon was involved in four of Perry’s victories. She won the 200 freestyle in 2 minutes, 24.02 seconds and later in the meet claimed the 100 free in 1:02.54. The co-captain led off the 200 medley relay that included Breanna Penenger, Haley Vaughn and Sadee Whitfield that won in 2:18.93 and anchored the winning 200 free relay unit that touched in 2:02.96, with Vaughn, Whitfield and Anna Ridnour also swimming legs for the win.

Penenger slashed her previous personal-best time in the 500 free by 14 seconds after touching first in 6:28.13. The win came after she had shaved six seconds off her prior best in the 200 free while placing second behind Kenyon in 2:24.27.

Junior co-captain Vaughn was second in the 200 individual medley (2:41.84) and 100 breaststroke (1:23.2), with Ridnour third in the later in 1:39.15.

Vivian Gonzalez placed second for Perry in the 100 backstroke (1:21.55) and was third in the 50 free (31.03) while joining Penenger, Whitfield and Breanna Ackerman in the 400 free relay, which placed second in 5:05.96.

Perry did not have an entrant in the 100 butterfly and is unlikely to compete in the event this season. Vaughn swam the 50-meter butterfly leg in the 200 medley relay for the Jayettes.

Perry will travel back to Des Moines Thursday when the join Algona for a three-team meet at Lincoln High. The meet will begin at 5:30 p.m.
