Robert William Elliott, 87, of Waterloo died at the Bethany Life nursing home in Story City, Iowa, on Feb. 10, 2025. A private burial will take place at the Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry, Iowa.
Robert was born to Mark and Helen Elliott on June 6, 1937.
In 1957 he married Lorene E. Godwin, who passed away in 2008. From this marriage came three children, their spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In 2010 he married Karen K. McCoy, who brought three children, their spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In 1961 Robert joined the Iowa State Patrol, completing a successful and rewarding career in 1997.
Every family has its secrets. One that Robert wouldn’t want you to know is that he cared for Lorene, at home, throughout her struggle with Alzheimer’s. Another — which he would want you to know and that he shared — was his faith in Jesus Christ as your savior. This last secret I’m not as sure about, but it was our last laugh together, and he seemed proud of himself. While in the hospital in December, the nurses didn’t seem to be responding quickly enough to his often-used “need help” button. So he finally called 911 and requested a nurse. They are not happy when you do that. He did it twice.

Bob was our neighbor since 1997 when we moved in beside him. He always took the time to talk to you if you were outside and would drive by in his black Corvette when going out to eat and talk to us from the car. Before he got his Corvette, he asked us if he should, and we said, Why not? Enjoy your retirement. Next thing we knew, he had it. When he first got the car, he took my husband for a ride and felt bad he didn’t give me one. I was fine. It was always comforting to know we had the state patrol retiree so close. We will miss Bob, such a great patriot and man! –Steve and Sheila
