Ronald James Lutz was born March 6, 1940, in rural Lone Tree, Iowa, the son of James Harvey and Velda Elsie (Jarrard) Lutz.

Raised on the family farm, he attended country school and attended high school at Lone Tree, graduating in 1958. He was a graduate of Iowa State University in 1964 with a degree in agricultural journalism.

Ron spent four years of active duty in the United States Air Force.

After receiving his honorable discharge in 1966, he accepted a job with Reiman Publications in Milwaukee, Wis. Ron was honored to work with Roy Reiman but when an offer was made by Wallace’s Farmer to join the editorial staff, he couldn’t resist coming back to Iowa. He later worked for Successful Farming and finished his career freelancing in agriculture and veterinary journalism.

Ron married the love of his life, Donna Lea McKowen, Oct. 10, 1972, in St. Charles, Iowa.

Most all of Ron’s working and married life was spent in the Des Moines area. He enjoyed BBQ and published his own book, “Whatcha Need to Know to BARBEQUE like a PRO.”

Survivors include his wife, Donna Lutz of Waukee; one son, Jonathan (Jenny) Lutz of Clive; two grandchildren, Jackson Lutz and Mary Lutz; one brother, Daryl (Clara) Lutz of Lone Tree; one sister, Joyce (Steve) Murdock of Perry; several nieces, nephew and cousins; and many friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents.
