The Bluejays storm Dewey Field.

The Perry varsity football team is, for the moment, without a head coach.

The 2020 prep grid seasons were announced today, but the current state of the COVID-19 pandemic will need improving if there is even to be a season to begin with, though that decision remains months away.

Additional concerns have nothing to do with the virus and everything to do with roster size, as some worries continue to exist as to the viability of fielding a varsity program on account of participation numbers.

Coaches and administrators remain hopeful the low turnout of the past few campaigns can be addressed, with Perry set to open their season August 28 when Greene County visits Dewey Field for the 89th playing of the Cowbell Game.

The Bluejays will be in Class 3A District 8 for one year, as the IHSAA has limited the new assignments to 2020 only. Others in the district include ADM, DC-G, Des Moines Hoover, Norwalk, and Winterset.

Perry opens play at home August 28 with the Cowbell Game against rival Greene County. Consecutive road games follow, with trips to Nevada (Sept. 4) and Sayel (Sept. 11) before a home contest against Clarke Sept. 18.

District 8 action starts Sept. 25 with a short trip to DC-G, with a bus ride to Norwalk on Oct. 2 the week six outing. Perry will entertain Winterset Oct. 9 in the first football game between the two Raccoon River Conference schools since 2007, with Des Moines Hoover coming to Dewey Field Oct. 16. The regular season concludes Oct. 23 with a road game at ADM.
