MARSHALLTOWN, IOWA — Senior Jaylene Karolus and freshman Quin Mahler-Moreno both competed twice Friday at the Marshalltown YMCA in the preliminary round at the state swim meet.

Mahler-Moreno advanced to the finals in the 500 freestyle by lowering her own school record with a clocking of 5 minutes, 9.05 seconds. The posting lowered her No. 13 seed time of 5:13.75.

She entered the 22nd seed in the 100 breaststroke and finished 22nd, touching in 1:08.32, which lowered her seed time of 1:08.62 and is now the new PHS standard.

Karolus was swimming in the state meet for the second consecutive season. She narrowly missed the B finals in the 50 free by reaching the wall in 24.62 seconds and finishing 17th, shaving -.12 ticks off her No. 16 seed time and resetting her own school record.

The senior standout entered as the 18th seed (1:00.22) in the 100 butterfly. Her 1:00.71 was the second-fastest time she has swam in the event and placed Karolus 23rd.

Both Jayettes will be joined by sophomores Sophia McDevitt and Lily Riley Saturday as Perry competes in the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay. The relays are timed finals, with Perry the 24th (of 32) seeds in both events.

The meet will begin at 12 p.m. Saturday. Before swimming begins Perry head coach Jean Dowd will be honored with an IGHSAU Golden Plaque of Distinction in honor of her years of devotion to the sport and the impact she has had on all the swimmers she has instructed.
