School spirit soars as seven Jayette wrestlers compete at state

Perry pride was high and wide Wednesday when the Perry High School held an afternoon pep rally for the seven Jayette wrestlers traveling to Iowa City for the first-ever Iowa high school state girls wrestling tournament, organized by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

The tournament is set for Thursday and Friday at the Xtream Arena in Iowa City. The Jayette wrestlers competing at the state tournament include:

  • Mercedes Ponce at 105 lbs. Ponce, a sophomore, has a season record of 33-12. She placed 4th at Regionals.
  • Taylor Atwell at 115 lbs. Atwell, a senior, has a season record of 34-12. She placed 2nd at Regionals.
  • Ayden Erickson at 125 lbs. Erickson, a freshman, has a season record of 31-15. She placed 4th at Regionals.
  • Charity Mickles at 130 lbs. Mickles, a senior, has a season record of 28-5. She placed 3rd at Regionals.
  • Julie Maylum at 140 lbs. Maylum, a sophomore, has a season record of 38-12. She placed 2nd at Regionals.
  • Lauren Rodgers at 145 lbs. Rodgers, a sophomore, has a season record of 41-8. She placed 1st at Regionals.
  • Chelsea Mickles at 235 lbs. Mickles, a sophomore, has a season record of 11-3. She placed 2nd at Regionals.

The pep rally included high-energy performances by the PHS Pep Band and by the PHS wrestling cheerleading squad.

Brief remarks were delivered by PHS Athletic Director Katelyn Whelchel and PHS Girls Wrestling Assistant Coach T. J. Maylum. Whelchel thanked the many students, staff, administrators, volunteer, parents and all others who supported the wrestling program this year and said further improvements and innovations are on the wat for next season.

Maylum praised the efforts of the Jayette wrestlers and described, his voice cracking with emotion, the struggles and accomplishments of the young athletes.

Two of the Jayette competitors — senior Taylor Atwell and sophomore Julie Maylum — gave brief and emotional testimonials of gratitude.
