ATLANTIC — Neither the weather nor the game of any of the Perry golfers were particularly warm Friday, as the Bluejays stumbled to seventh place in their eight-team Class 3A Sectional.

Atlantic (302), Glenwood (319) and Harlan (334) claimed the top three spots to advance to the district meet at Majestic Hill in Denison May 20. Carroll (335) just missed advancing, with ADM (350), Creston (353), Perry (356) and Greene County (389) completing the field.

“We didn’t have a very good day as a team,” Perry head coach Nick Field admitted. “The two rain delays may have played a part in that.

“It seemed liked some of the guys were playing good, then, six or seven holes in, we had to stop for an hour because of lightning,” he added. “If we didn’t have that break things might have been better for us.”

Atlantic had four of the top five individual finishers, with Ben Renaud and Jake Olsen each carding a round of 73 while Kyle Nelson and Matt Gearhart placed 4-5 with rounds of 78. Glenwood’s Kobe Rhodes was third with his 76.

Junior Noah Wilkening led Perry with a 44-42–86 with seniors Kade VanKirk (45-44–89) and Ryan Rathje (45-45–90) and sophomore Connor Nielsen (45-46–91) also scoring. The team did not use the scores from junior Dane McCarty (49-45–94) or sophomore Luke Rathje (54-52–106).

Not playing for Perry in the sectional meet were seniors Tanner Darr and Brody Kimrey, who join VanKirk and Ryan Rathje in having their prep golf careers end.
