Voters in the Perry Community School District have until 8 p.m. Tuesday night to brave the cold and snow and go to the polls at the McCreary Community Building at 1800 Pattee St. in Perry. There they can vote yes or no, up or down, on whether to finance $6.5 million in additions and remodeling at the Perry High School.

We encourage voters to support the Perry schools by voting yes in the referendum. The reasons why the district needs these improved facilities have been thoroughly explained and justified in recent letters to the editor. Current and former students, current and former faculty, local employers — everyone who understands the matter recommends that we vote yes.

The school district’s property tax levy will soon drop as some old debt is paid and rolls off the books. The levy won’t drop quite as far if we approve today’s school bond, but it will still fall — 75 cents per $1,000 of property value. It seems like a small price to pay for the future excellence of our schools.

There’s every reason to support ongoing improvements in our schools and no reason to oppose them. The next generation of Perry students deserves the same opportunities — even more opportunities — that the previous generation enjoyed. Vote yes for Perry kids.
