Second place finish for Perry Academic Decathlon team

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Perry High School Academic Decathlon team competed Thursday and Friday in a regional competition at Central Campus and came away with an overall finish of second in the small school division.

In addition to the overall team result, Perry students earned multiple individual honors, including four first-place finishes.

Students were interviewed by judges Thursday and presented both prepared and impromptu speeches. Friday saw students tested in math, science, social science, music, art, literature and economics. The second day ended with a quiz bowl.

Three Perry students — Molly Moorhead, Aliya Ikhasanova and Ashley Robles — competed in the Honors Level, for core GPA of 3.8 and above.

Ikhasanova was first in interview, second in speech and third in math, with Robley earning a first place in social science and Moorhead taking third in both economics and speech.

Jefry Gonzalez, Carolina Robles and Bryce Eastman were involved in the Scholastic Level, which was for core GPA of 3.2-3.799.

Gonzalez was first in interview, second in math and third in both speech and economics. Robles took first in both literature and music, second in art and third in economics, math, speech and in overall results while Eastman was second in economics and third in science, literature and math.

The varsity level, core GPA 3.19 and below, included Perry students Jose Chavez and Lucas Davis.

Chavez was first in economics, second overall and in science, art and social science, while third in literature, match and music. Davis, meanwhile, was first in interview, second in math and third in economics.

The students were coached by Teresa Kresse and Lisa Schumacher.
