Cavanaugh suffered an off-duty medical incident Oct. 18 while driving a bus for the Woodward-Granger Community School District. He was able to drive the bus to a safe location so as not to endanger any of the school children on board.

“Chief Cavanaugh saved the lives of others while fighting for his own. This is a true hero, and he will be remembered for that final act,” said Louis Loon of the Central Iowa Police and Fire Monitoring.
