Severe thunderstorm warning in effect until 4:45 a.m. Friday

The National Weather Service office in Johnston has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Perry area until 4:45 a.m. Friday.

The Perry storm sirens were activated at 4:15 a.m.

At 3:55 a.m. severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near the Sac City Municipal Airport to 4 miles southwest of Ralston to 4 miles north of Adair to 6 miles southeast of Bridgewater and moving eastward at 55 mph.

A personal weather station near Audubon reported a 62 mph wind gust at 3:39 a.m. Wind gusts to 60 mph and quarter-size hail is forecast. Hail damage to vehicles and wind damage to roofs, siding and trees are expected.

Along with Perry, locations impacted include West Des Moines, Fort Dodge, Waukee, Boone, Carroll, Creston, Winterset, Jefferson, Adel, Sac City, Greenfield, Rockwell City, Corning, Guthrie Center, Dakota City, Humboldt, Ogden, Lake City and Manson. The severe thunderstorm warning area includes U.S. Interstate 80 between mile markers 70 and 117.

A tornado warning has also been issued for southwestern Dallas County until 4:30 a.m.

At 4:00 a.m. a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Adair or 10 miles southwest of Guthrie Center and moving eastward at 45 mph.

Radar-indicated rotation was observed, the NWS said. A tornado and quarter size hail are possible.

Flying debris will be dangerous to people without shelter. Mobile homes could be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows and vehicles could occur. Tree damage is likely.
