Severe thunderstorm warning until 5:30 p.m. for Perry area

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect until 5:30 p.m. for Dallas, Boone, northwestern Madison, northern Polk and southwestern Story counties in central Iowa, the National Weather Service in Des Moines has announced.

At 4:39 p.m. severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Perry to near Granger to Waukee and moving northeast at 30 mph.

Wind gusts of 60 mph and penny size hail are reported. Damage to roofs, siding and trees is predicted.

Along with Perry, cities impaced by the warning include Ames, Ankeny, Urbandale, Johnston, Clive, Boone, Grimes, Nevada, Polk City, Huxley, Saylorville, Madrid, Ogden, Slater, Granger, Gilbert, Woodward, Iowa State Center, Saylorville Lake and Big Creek Lake.

A tornado watch remains in effect until 10 p.m.
