Severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday

The National Weather Service offices in Des Moines has issued a severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday for Dallas County and all of central and western Iowa.

Strong to severe storms are expected to continue through the late afternoon and early evening hours. The storms will be slow moving, north northwest at around 20 mph, and some might produce winds up to 50 mph, penny-sized hail and locally heavy rains with
ponding water on roads.

A few localized storms might be even stronger and reach severe limits, with one-inch or larger hail and wind gusts to 60 mph or higher.

The NWS recommends that anyone participating in outdoor activities, including boating, should be prepared to seek shelter indoors on short notice. Lightning is a hazard for all storms whether they are severe or not.

Dallas County and the following Iowa counties are included in the severe thunderstorm watch: Adair, Audubon, Boone, Buena Vista, Calhoun, Carroll, Cass, Cerro Gordo, Clay,  Crawford, Dickinson, Emmet, Franklin, Greene, Guthrie, Hamilton, Hancock, Hardin, Humboldt, Kossuth, Madison, Palo Alto, Pocahontas, Polk, Sac, Story, Warren, Webster, Winnebago, Worth and Wright.
