With the weather starting to warm up and the storm season approaching, the Iowa Homeland Security, Emergency Management Division and National Weather Service (NWS) have designated the week of March 22 through March 26 as Severe Weather Awareness Week, the Perry Police Department announced Friday.

Daily topics to be discussed this year include:

Monday, March 22 – Severe Thunderstorms
Tuesday, March 23 – Receiving Warning information
Wednesday, March 24 – Tornadoes
Thursday, March 25 – Family Preparedness
Friday, March 26 – Flooding

The NWS will issue public information statements each day during the week that promote severe weather safety. The NWS website also has information available concerning severe weather and preparedness.

The city of Perry will participate in the statewide tornado drill scheduled for Wednesday, March 24 at about 11 a.m. In the event of severe weather, the test will be postponed until Thursday, March 25.

During the tornado drill, the siren tones will cycle as it does in a true emergency. The city does not sound an all clear. The annual tornado drill is an excellent time to review tornado safety plans and conduct tornado drills in companies, schools and other facilities. The city encourages all local organizations to participate in the annual event.
