Shackelford leads by three strokes, Panthers team stands fourth

Panorama sophomore Kolby Shackelford (second from left) finished one stroke behind DIke-New Hartford senior Bo Weissenfluh (far left) to earn the runner-up spot at the Class 2A Boys State Golf Tournament in Marshalltown last spring. Now, in a return trip to the same course, Shackelford enters the second and final day with a three-stroke lead after an even-par 69 Thursday.

MARSHALLTOWN — Junior standout Kolby Shackelford missed a state championship by a single stroke last spring at the American Legion Golf Course.

Now, a year removed but at the same venue, he will start the second day of the state tournament three shots clear of West Branch freshman Dylan Countryman.

Shackelford fired an even-par 34-35–69, with Countryman at three-over par 72. Des Moines Christian senior Nate Juffer and DMC freshman Jake Weissenburger are third and fourth, respectively, at 73 and 74, with Kuemper Catholic senior Corbin Bortelli fifth at 75.

Weather could very well play a key role on the second day of the tourney, and might delay the start or possible cause a postponement. At the very least, the course will now play much longer with wet grounds due to drenching overnight rains.

DMC leads the team standings at 304, with West Branch at 308 and Kuemper at 309. Panorama is fourth at 321 and Williamsburg fifth at 322, with New Hampton (325), Sioux Center (335), Estherville-Lincoln Central (337) and LaPorte City Union (339) also in the field.

Wyatt Appleseth was second for Panorama with a 43-37–80 while Lucas Leiferman shot a 45-40–85 and Trey Cobb a 43-44–87. Also playing for the Panthers were Ryan Klinge (48-41–89) and Dylan Douglass (48-45–93).
