Shawn Schmitz, 51, of Burlington, Iowa, and formerly of Perry died Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2022, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 1 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Perry. Burial will be at a later date in Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry, Iowa. Visitation will be Wednesday, Nov. 30, with family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m. at Murdock Funeral Home in Perry.

Shawn Matthew Schmitz was born June 12, 1971, in Perry to William John and Kathleen Ann (Becker) Schmitz, the youngest of seven children.

He attended St. Patrick Catholic School through eighth grade and graduated from Perry High School with the class of 1990. After high school, Shawn attended the University of Northern Iowa, Des Moines Area Community College and Iowa State University, majoring in industrial engineering.

Shawn enjoyed spending time with family, especially his nieces and nephews. He will be remembered as a great uncle and brother as well as a person who was always giving and wanting to make others happy.

He had a great sense of humor and liked to tell jokes.

Shawn enjoyed cooking and sharing some of his recipes that he created. He also enjoyed laying in the sun, taking long walks, cruising in his sports cars, playing video games, watching football and taking trips to the mountains.

Left to cherish Shawn’s memory are his sisters, Michelle (Mitch) Onnen of Perry and Lori (Richard) Lohman of Perry; his brothers, Dale (Ruth) Schmitz of Osceola, Jeff (Robin) Schmitz of Dawson, Todd Schmitz of Perry and Kelly (Michelle) Schmitz of Perry; and many nieces; nephews; aunts; uncles; cousins; and friends.

In death, he rejoins his parents, William and Kathleen.

Memorials in Shawn’s name will be directed to the family and may be sent to Murdock Funeral Home. Online condolences may be left at murdockfuneralhome.net.
