Eleven members of the Society of Retired Educators (SORE) coffee group met Tuesday morning at the Perry Perk Coffeehouse in memory of Richard “Dick” Ehlers.

Shirley Ehlers treated the SORE men to coffee and sweet rolls in honor of Dick’s birthday. Shirley’s husband was a well respected and longtime member of the group.

Dick was the chemistry and physics teacher at Perry High School for 31 years. He came to Perry in 1975 with Shirley and their two daughters, Kirsten and Kim. He retired in 2006 and passed away Nov. 24, 2015.

Dick is remembered as a an active member of local religious and civic organizations, such as the First United Methodist Church, the Perry Lions Club, the Perry Star Promenaders and the Teachers Association. He loved fishing and hunting for turkey, pheasant and deer, was an accomplished woodworker, enjoyed reading and travelling.

He and Shirley were first-rate square dancers.

Joining the SORE collective Tueday to honor Ehlers were Don Meyers, Andy Bambrick, Dan Spellman, Lou Hoger, Ray Harden, Ken Finer, Bob Rounds, Larry Blaker, Charlie Thompson, Roger Emmert and Walter Seick.
