The Perry Middle School sixth graders surprised Principal Shaun Kruger Friday afternoon with a surprise cake to thank him for his service in the Perry Community School District, which began before any of the sixth graders were alive.

Kruger started in 2005 in the PCSD. He will take up a new position in the fall as superintendent of schools in the West Liberty School District.

“What a very nice surprise!” Kruger said as the gleeful students cheered. “Gosh, what a way to end the year, with a nice cake. It’s been an absolute pleasure being your principal. Sorry I’ll miss you the next two years, but you’ll be in good hands next year with the principal coming up.”

Kruger has spent 26 years in education, including stints as a junior high school assistant principal and as a fourth, fifth and seventh grade science and social science teacher in Texas.

With an enrollment of about 1,300 students, West Liberty CSD, the home of the Comets, is in the Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency.

The sheet cake was supplied by the Perry HyVee.
