Spartans hand Hawk girls loss in season opener

WOODWARD — Collins-Maxwell opened an eight-point lead after the first eight minutes of the season Friday and never looked back en route to a 56-23 win over Woodward-Granger in non-conference girls basketball.

W-G was a 48-38 winner in the first game of last season for each team, and both went on to strong campaigns, the Hawks finishing 18-5 and the Spartans 19-5.

The guests were in control throughout, widening their advantage to 28-13 at the halftime break. The guests led, 44-16, after three frames and waltzed home from there.

Darby Nixon led W-G with 14 points, with Ava Petersen, Rian Jamison, and McKenna Carroll each adding three points. Nixon sank three 3-pointers and Carroll and Jamison one each. The lone two-point basket came from Nixon, with the hosts finishing 6-of-15 at the foul line.

C-M made good on 16-of-21 free throws and pulled down 34 rebounds. Reagan Franzen had 20 points and Erica Houge 17 to pace the Spartans.

W-G returns to action Dec. 3 with a trip to Martensdale-St. Marys. They will visit Class 3A No. 6 Panorama Dec. 4.
