Split decision in season opening triangular for W-G grapplers

JEWELL — Woodward-Granger began their 2019-2020 wrestling season with a 1-1 mark Tuesday at a triangular hosted by South Hamilton. W-G posted a 54-24 win over the hosts, but fell, 40-37, to North Polk.

Senior Cody Fisher was 2-0 in his first action as defending state champion at 220 pounds. He received a forfeit at 220 from North Polk and scored a pin, in 1 minute, 32 seconds, at 285 pounds against South Hamilton.

Peyton Nixon (106 pounds) was 2-0 with a pin and a win by forfeit, with Corbyn Atwell (120) 2-0 with a 10-2 major decision and a forfeit while Joel Harney (113) was given a pair of forfeits.

Matthew White (138) recorded a pin and a 3-1 win by decision, with Dustin Harney 1-1 at 152 pounds with a pinfall victory.

Jon McKeever (160), Kade Polich (182) and Devan Brown (195) were all 1-1, with all three earning their victories by pin fall while Tjaden Smeltzer (126) and Jayden Flugge-Smith (132) were both 1-1 with wins via forfeit.

Kolby Fogarty was unable to come up with a win in his two matches at 170 pounds, with Jayden Dorenkamp and Brayden Simons both dropping matches at 145 while Alex Evans was upended in his one match at heavyweight.

W-G will host Baxter, Colfax-Mingo, Collins-Maxwell, Coon Rapids-Bayard, Martensdale-St. Marys, Roland-Story, Southeast Warren and WDM Valley for the annual Field Invitational Saturday, with action beginning at 10 a.m. The Hawks will then join Ogden for a triangular at Perry Tuesday before competing in the Ogden Tourney Dec. 14.
