Spring construction projects are in full swing in Perry.

The Perry Water Works Department and Holbrook Construction Inc. of Yale replaced a fire hydrant at Willis Avenue and 12th Street Monday, correcting damage occurring when a vehicle left the roadway Feb. 26 and hopped the hydrant.

Perry Water Works Superintendent Hank Schmidt said the old four-inch hydrant is being replaced with a new six-inch unit, which will permit a higher volume of flow through the hydrant.

A second water project by the Perry Water Works Department and Holbrook Construction involved replacing service lines at several Second Street commercial properties. The water-line replacement was originally scheduled for the first week of April, but stormy weather delayed the work.

The project neared completion Monday with the pouring of concrete over the replacement lines by Landals Concrete of Perry.

Schmidt said the lines were laid too near the surface and froze during the severe winter cold. Snow removal from the roadway and sidewalks of Second Street subject the lines to more intense cold than lines protected by the snow pack, Schmidt said.
