Perry's Zachary Thompson finished his junior season in third place at the state tournament after placing sixth as both a freshman and a sophomore. He earned his fourth trip to state at Saturday's District Tourney.

High school girls basketball teams have been busy in the gym this past week, and will be joined Monday by their classmates when boys practices are allowed to officially begin.

Also starting Monday will be practices for the upcoming prep wrestling season.

Perry will open their girls hoops season with a home game against Des Moines North Nov. 17, with the Jayettes visiting Newton Nov. 21. They will play in the North Polk Jamboree Monday.

The Bluejay cagers will participate in the Roland-Story Jamboree Nov. 20 before hosting North Polk in a boys-only affair Nov. 28, with the Perry girls at Greene County that evening. Both teams host Carroll Dec. 1 in the first Raccoon River Conference twinbill of the season.

Perry’s wrestling team will compete in a quadrangular Nov. 30 at Roland-Story and in the Harlan Invite Dec. 2 before hosting the first of four home events on their schedule Dec. 5 when Montezuma, Ogden and Woodward-Granger visit for a quadrangular. The Bluejays are competing in Class 3A this season.

W-G begins their girls basketball campaign Nov. 17 at Collins-Maxwell, with both Hawk squads visiting Martensdale-St. Marys Nov. 27 and West Central Valley Nov. 28, with a trip to Des Moines Christian on tap for Dec. 1. W-G will play at home for the first time when Saydel pays a visit Dec. 4.

In contrast, the W-G matmen compete on the home mats for each of their first two events. The Hawks host Colfax-Mingo, North Polk and South Hamilton for a quadrangular Nov. 28 before hosting the annual Field Invitational Dec. 2.

The Panorama girls will play in a multi-team scrimmage Nov. 16 at Harlan before beginning their season at home Nov. 21 against Gilbert. They will face two-time defending state champion Springville, at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Nov. 25 before joining the Panther boys in hosting Des Moines Christian Nov. 28 and West Central Valley Dec. 1.

Panorama’s boys host Logan-Magnolia for a scrimmage No. 18 before pairing with the Panther girls in the aforementioned set of home contests.

The wrestling season for Panorama begins Nov. 28 in a multi-team event at Glidden-Ralston, with the Panthers to compete in the Treynor Invitational Dec. 2. Panorama hosts Van Meter and West Central Valley Dec. 5 for a triangular, the lone home meet of the season save a Jan. 25 quadrangular with Lynnville-Sully, North Polk and Pleasantville.
