The Gamble Block at 1203 Second St. suffered extensive damage to the roof and the southwest upper corner of the structure in the devastating Aug. 10, 2020, derecho winds.

Trees were split and power lines downed Monday when a severe thunderstorm whipped the Perry area with 90 mph wind gusts and pelting rain and hail.

The storm hit about 10:30 a.m., causing widespread damage and closing many streets. Most of Perry is without electrical power at this hour, according to a spokesperson with the Perry Police Department.

Willis Avenue remains closed between 10th and 13th streets at this hour as downed trees are cleared away and broken power lines repaired.

The downtown area was not spared, with the Gamble Block at 1203 Second St., now home to the Tin Pig Tavern, sustained extensive damage to its roof and southwest upper floor. A large section of brick wall collapsed onto a parked car along Warford Street.

Plate glass windows and plywood panels were smashed and strewn about at the old Woolworth building at 1102 Second St.

No injuries were reported, according to the police spokesperson.

The spokesperson asked residents to remain off the streets and in their homes until all power lines and trees are cleared and secured.
