The occupant of the unit in the Perry Park Apartments escaped unharmed early Thursday when a stovetop fire filled his dwelling with smoke and set off smoke detectors.

A report of a fire in a unit of the Perry Park Apartments shortly after 3 a.m. Thursday led Perry Police officers to the scene, followed soon after by the Perry Volunteer Fire Department, where a pot of beans on a lit burner was discovered producing heavy smoke.

After first determining the sole occupant of the smoky rooms had exited unharmed, Perry Police Officer Matt Aswegan and Perry Police Officer Lourdes Clay then sought to rouse and evacuate tenants of the adjoining units.

Perry Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Brian Eiteman entered the evacuated residence and found the stovetop source of the fumes, which was brought outside. Additional firefighters arrived with fans to clear the unit of lingering smoke.

“I forgot I left the stove on,” said the occupant of the unit. “Guess I should’ve been more careful.”

There were no injuries in the incident and no significant property damage.
