In our fast-paced world, many people have demanding jobs. While some work-related stress is normal, too much can lead to burnout — a state of total exhaustion caused by too much stress for a prolonged time. Burnout not only hurts your job performance, but it can impact your wellbeing too.

Common signs of burnout include feeling constantly tired, irritated or unmotivated. You might notice a lack of interest in work, difficulty concentrating or even physical symptoms, such as headaches or trouble sleeping.

Since these symptoms can build up overtime, it’s best to address them as they arise so they don’t become overwhelming.

Work stress can come from tight deadlines, long hours, lack of control or feeling unappreciated. Even if you like your job, you can end up feeling overwhelmed and burned out if you don’t keep a healthy work-life balance.

If you don’t address these issues in a timely manner, they might lead to poor mental health and strained relationships with loved ones.

The good news is there are ways to manage stress and prevent burnout: Take regular breaks. Get enough sleep. Stay physically active. Set boundaries between work and personal time.

It’s also important to tell others when you’re feeling overwhelmed, whether that’s by confiding in your supervisor, a coworker, your health provider or a mental health specialist.

Don’t be afraid to consider a job or career change if you feel that’s best for you.

Remember, prioritizing your well-being isn’t selfish. By managing stress and preventing burnout, you’ll not only feel better but also perform better at work and enjoy a more balanced life.
