Kids gathered at the Perry Public Library and the Carnegie Library Museum Saturday morning for fun and games at the John Glass Memorial Kids Fest.

Summer fitness was the theme of a program hosted by Hy-Vee for promoting fit lifestyles. After counting how many jumping jacks they could do in a minute, the kids got a prize and moved on to the next activity.

Fire trucks and other emergency vehicles lined the parking lot for exploration.

A petting zoo, courtesy of Marty Murphy of Dawson, was located under a tent behind the museum. A two-month old miniature mule named Ginger greeted visitors enthusiastically while her mother, Jasmine — a miniature pony — stood patiently behind her.

Murphy said Jasmine is expecting another baby mule in March next year. There were also baby bunnies, chickens, ducks and ducklings available for cuddling.

The museum had separate rooms for different events. Critter Cindy of the Dallas County Conservation Board showed kids how to spin a paper eagle feather on the tip of a pencil with just the heat from their hands.

“Next year you get to visit my sister, Lauren, too!” said Liam Finn, son of Erin and Casey Finn of Perry, referring to the monthly school visits from Critter Cindy.

Another room held a booth for Everybody Wins Iowa, a reading program recruiting volunteer mentors to read to kids at the Perry Elementary School. Christine Russell and Anna Sunstrom shared their excitement for reading with the families who stopped by.

“For volunteering, contact us at volunteer@everybodywinsiowa.org,” Sunstrom said.

The so-called Women’s Room in the basement of the Carnegie held Mexican Bingo, directed by Rosa and Beyonce Gonzalez. The bingo cards where pictures of typical Mexican culture.

In the courtroom next door, kids waited in line to get their faces painted, such as David Thonge, 6, of Perry, who sat quietly while he got his face painted like Pikachu.

The John Glass Memorial Kids Fest event is an annual free event for all who wish to attend. Other activities throughout the day included games and prizes for kids outside, balloon animals and a presentation on sugar gliders.

Food was prepared by the Perry Volunteer Fire Department.
