Susan Carol (Hohanshelt) Sayers, 86, of Des Moines and formerly of Perry passed away at the Calvin Community Senior Living in Des Moines, Iowa, on July 10, 2024, from complications of advanced vascular dementia.
Susan was born Jan. 19, 1938, at King’s Daughters Hospital in Perry, Iowa, to Joe and Geraldine (Struthers) Hohanshelt.
She graduated from Perry High School in 1956 and from AIB in 1957.
Susan spent most of her life living in Perry and worked for many years as an administrative assistant for the Woodward State Hospital School.
Susan retired at age 62 and moved to the Des Moines area in 2016.
Preceding her in death are her parents, grandparents, multiple cousins, aunts and uncles.
Susan is survived by daughters, Jennifer Sayers of West Des Moines and Liz (Sayers) Hass of Waukee; two grandchildren, Jillian Westhoff of Cedar Falls and Parker Westhoff of Urbandale/Waukee; and a sister, Sylvia (Hohanshelt) Lindsey of Ankeny.
In accord with Susan’s request, no funeral services are planned.
Also in accord with her wishes, Susan’s body has been donated to the University of Iowa School of Medicine. Once studies have been completed, Susan’s body will be cremated and her ashes returned to her family. A celebration of life will be planned for a later date.
