Teen girl steals Coon Rapids PD squad car, crashes in Perry

A 14-year-old female is taken into custody by officers of the Coon Rapids Police Department Sunday afternoon after allegedly stealing one of the agency's squad cars and driving it as far as Perry.

A 14-year-old female made off with a Coon Rapids Police Department patrol vehicle Sunday afternoon and was pursued eastward at high speed on Iowa Highway 141 as far as Perry, where the chase ended when spike strips deflated the tires of the SUV, and the vehicle came to rest in the south ditch near 12th Street in Perry.

The law enforcement vehicle was reported stolen about 3:15 p.m. by the Coon Rapids Police Department. The circumstances of the juvenile’s possessing the squad car are unknown at this hour.

Law enforcement agencies involved in the pursuit included the Iowa State Patrol, Perry Police Department, Dallas County Sheriff’s office, Greene County Sheriff’s office, Guthrie County Sheriff’s office and Coon Rapids Police Department.

The spike strips were deployed west of the Raccoon River near Perry and successfully punctured the tires of the vehicle, which continued eastward until blocked by a Perry Police Department vehicle.

The Coon Rapids PD unit entered the ditch, striking a roadway sign before coming to rest.
