A Texas man faces first-degree robbery charges in connection with a reported armed robbery Sunday evening at the Kum & Go at 3105 Grand Prairie Parkway in Waukee.

Sammy Dajuan Woodard, 31, of 7550 S. Westmoreland Road., #1032, Dallas, Texas, was charged with first-degree robbery.

According to court records, Woodard allegedly entered the store about 6:30 p.m. and “walked up to the counter and asked for cigarettes.”

As the store clerk scanned the item, Woodard “walked around the counter, and a physical altercation with the clerk ensued.”

Woodard “was able to overpower the clerk and threw the cash register on the ground,” according to court records. The register opened, “and there was approximately $260 taken.”

Woodard left the store and was later taken into custody, telling the arresting officers “that he took $20 out of the register to feed his kids.” He was unarmed when arrested.

The store clerk said he believed Woodard was carrying a concealed firearm “based on putting his hand in his pocket for a long period of time.”

Woodard is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $25,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled to make an initial appearance Monday in Dallas County District Court.
