Thomas William Smith, 73, of West Des Moines passed away unexpectedly at his home on Sept. 4, 2024.
Born Jan. 1, 1951, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, Thomas was the son of William and Carmon (Erickson) Smith.
He grew up in Rockwell City and Perry before moving to Wisconsin.
As a youth he loved fishing and being outdoors and was known for his mischievous nature. Thomas matured into a free spirit with a zest for life.
On Sept. 19, 1970, Thomas married Lucille Kedrowski, and to this union two sons were born, Dallas and David. Thomas and Lucille later divorced but remained friends.
Thomas was a passionate fisherman and loved spending time outdoors. He also had a keen interest in building computers, bowling, learning about history and listening to music.
His life journey took him from Iowa to Wisconsin to Las Vegas for a time before finally settling in West Des Moines.
Thomas is survived by his two sons, Dallas Smith and David (Amanda) Smith; his grandchildren, Alexander, Danielle, Austin, David, Evan, Owen and Avery Smith; his sister, Jeanie Campbell; half-sister, Shawn Smith; half-brother, Danny (Sarah) Smith; and his friend, Lucille. He is also remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Dorothy Smith and Richard and Carmon Sandal; his brother-in-law, Scott A. Campbell; and his half-brother, Darrell Smith.
