Perry's Zach Thompson scored a 6-3 win over Jon Hellman of LaPorte City Union in the 120-pound quarterfinals of the Class 2A state tournament Friday.

DES MOINES — Perry’s Zach Thompson (120 pounds) and Gisaveri Niyibizi (126) each dropped tight contests to defending state champions in the semifinals at the state wrestling tourney Friday.

Thompson suffered a narrow 5-4 loss to defending 106 champion Michael Millage of Crestwood, while Niyibizi came out on the short end of a 2-0 decision to defending 120 champion Brock Rathbun of Center Point-Urbana.

Both will compete at 10 a.m. Saturday in the consolation bracket semifinals. A win assures a chance for third place, a loss would mean a match that would grant fifth place to the winner.

Kade VanKirk (132 pounds) fell to third-ranked Shea Swafford of Mediapolis, 5-2, in the consolation bracket. VanKirk will wrestle for seventh place Saturday.

ThePerryNews.com will have full details on all of Friday’s action later this evening.
