Three dead, five injured when semi tips, blocks lanes

A multi-vehicle accident claimed three lives and sent five injured persons to the hospital Sunday in Henry County in southeast Iowa.

The incident occurred about 3:30 p.m. the U.S. Highway 34 west of Mount Pleasant, when the driver of a semi-tractor trailer “lost control entering the left shoulder then jack-knifed, overturned and came to rest on the driver’s side, blocking both eastbound lanes of Iowa Highway 34,” according to a report by the Iowa State Patrol.

Two vehicles traveling eastbound behind the truck then struck the overturned unit near the 230 mile marker. A 2011 Chrysler Town and County van struck the semi, killing the driver, Vicki J. Morrow, 74, of Ottumwa, and two passengers, Daniel J. Yutzy, 44, of Bloomfield and Kathryn E. Yutzky, 44, of Bloomfield.

The Yutzys were not wearing safety belts at the time of the collision.

Injured in the Morrow van were passengers Henry Mast, 48, of Bloomfield, who was transported by the Henry County EMS to the Henry County Health Center, and Suzanne K. Mast, 48, of Bloomfield, who was transported by the Henry County EMS to the University of Iowa Medical Center.

A 2010 Mazda M3, driven by Guylain N. Landa, 31, of Cedar Rapids, also struck the truck. Landa was transported with injuries by the Henry County EMS to the Henry County Health Center.

A passenger in Landa’s vehicle, Shelda O. Florestal, 27, of Ottumwa,¬†was also injured and transported by the Henry County EMS to the Henry County Health Center.

The driver of the semi-tractor trailer, Wayne O. Salo, 68, of Sioux City, was injured and transported by the Henry County EMS to the Henry County Health Center.

The accident is under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
