Three Burlington women died Saturday when their vehicle, a 2017 Chevrolet Trax, was struck by a train.

Three Burlington women were killed Saturday morning when the SUV they were traveling in was struck broadside by a train near Danville, Iowa.

Amber L. Curry, 29, was driving the 2017 Chevrolet Trax, and her passengers were Laura J. Burch, 27, and Anna N. Smith, 26/ They were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to a report from the Iowa State Patrol, the incident occurred about 11:30 a.m., when the SUV failed to yield to an eastbound train at a private driveway crossing on Old Highway 34 just east of the Des Moines County town of 934.

The report said no controls were present at the railway crossing when the vehicle was “struck in a boradside manner” and rolled into the north ditch. Only Smith was wearing a seatbelt, the report said.

The accident is under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol, which was assisted at the scene by numerous public safety agencies.
