Three PAWS members speed to four state championships

GRINNELL — The Perry Area Winter Swim (PAWS) swim team claimed four victories and a plethora of top-three finishes at the Greater Iowa Swim League state meet at Grinnell College March 10.

PAWS swimmers accounted for four gold medal efforts, 13 second-place efforts and six third-place finishes in individual events, with two relays each placing second.

Ethan Winey (15-18) claimed state titles in the 50 and 100 freestyle races, touching in 23.72 and 52.6 seconds, respectively. He was second in the 50 backstroke in 28.97.

Sophia McDevitt (11-12) won the 100 backstroke in 1 minute, 13.16 seconds while touching second in the 100 individual medley in 1:11.21.

Sarah Vaughn (15-18) also had a blue-ribbon effort by finishing first in the 500 free in 6:14.05. She was second, in 2:20.86, in the 200 free.Isaac Winey (8U) was second in the 25 back (20.17), Joel Storey (9-10) third in the 50 free (32.48), Jacob Storey (13-14) second in the 50 free (25.94) and Drew Storey (15-18) second in the 50 and 100 free (24.08 and 53.05) and third in the 100 back (1:06.83).

Andrew Dowd and Riese Archer (both 13-14) rounded out the PAWS boys individual efforts. The former was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:17.7 and the later third in the 100 backstroke in 1:09.1.

Quin Mahler-Moreno (11-12) was third in both the 100 breaststroke (1:21.16) and 100 free (1:05.2) for the PAWS girls, with Jaylene Karolus (13-14) second in the 50 free (28.24) and 50 backstroke (32.82) while Amanda Holwegner (15-18) was second in the 50 breaststroke in 39.04.

Martina Rade (15-18) added to the PAWS girls strong meet by finishing second in the 100 backstroke (1:10.07) and 100 IM (1:12.37) while touching third in the 200 IM (2:37.31).

The girls 11-12 200 free relay unit of Lily Riley, Zoe Hibbert, McDevitt and Mahler-Moreno was second in 2:04.31, with Dowd, Drew Storey, Jacob Storey and Ethan Winey second in the boys 15-18 200 free relay in 1:38.73.

Ethan Winey was the top boys scorer with 57 points, with McDevitt compiling 52 points for the girls squad.

Participation in the state meet required qualifying times. The Midwest Regional meet will be held at the University of Minnesota pool in Minneapolis April 6-8, and qualifying times even more stringent than those for the state meet are required to participate.

McDevitt (11-12) is currently qualified in seven events, Mahler-Moreno (11-12) in four and both Riley (11-12) and Jaylene Karolus (13-14) in two apiece. Also clear to compete for the PAWS girls are Aleah Karolus (8U), Dannah Karolus (15-18), Abby Herman (15-18), Holwegner (15-18), Vaughn (15-18) and Rade (15-18), all in single events.

Ethan Winey (15-18), Joel Storey (9-10), Jacob Storey (13-14), Drew Storey (15-18), and Dowd (13-14) have all qualified in two events apiece, with Archer (13-14) to compete as well.
