Several Jayettes -- as well as the team as a whole -- recently collected a series of academic honors for their work in the classroom.

CARROLL — Single runs in each of the first three innings proved to be enough for host Carroll Thursday, as the Tigers (12-19) bounced Perry (10-22) from the postseason with a 3-1 win in their Class 4A Region 3 First Round game.[wpedon id=”85410″ align=”left”]

Carroll scored in the first when Laura Sweeney walked and stole second. She was on third with one out when a dropped third strike forced catcher Gabby West to throw to first baseman Jayna Kenney for the second out. Sweeney broke for the plate on the throw, with Kenney’s return peg to the plate a split-second late to catch Sweeney.

A sacrifice fly scored the second run, with a base hit driving in the third. Carroll could have made more noise in the third, but shortstop Jo Diw made an over the shoulder catch in short left field to deny a hit. A double in the gap later in the inning was picked up by right fielder Kennedy Tunink, who gave cut-off second baseman Sid Vancil an accurate relay throw. Vancil then fired a bullet from short right field to West at the plate to nail a Tiger runner and limit the damage.

Perry scored in the seventh when T.J. Sheehy singled. She moved to second on a ground out, then scored when Diw dropped a base hit into right field. Unfortunately Perry could not add to the rally, with the season ending one out later.

Seniors Diw, Sheehy, Vancil and Grace Stewart each had a hit in their final prep contests. Peyton Tunink had a double and a single, with West ripping a double.

Senior Alyssa Kruger was handed the loss in the ring. She allowed three runs on seven hits while walking one batter and hitting one with a pitch. Kruger recorded three strikeouts in her prep finale.[wpedon id=”85410″ align=”left”]

Julia LaRue yielded a run on seven hits and a walk while striking out nine in earning the win for the Tigers. She aided her own cause with a double, with Sydney Haakenson hitting a triple.

Carroll will now face No. 4 ADM, in Adel Saturday.

The senior quintet departs after being part of 94 wins since joining the program as eighth graders. They finished sixth at the 2016 state tournament as sophomores.

The Jayettes are coached by Tina Lutterman, with Ashley Fricke assisting.
