INDIANOLA — A much larger Indianola team had little trouble in posting a 119-48 win over visiting Perry Thursday in a girls swim meet.

The final score was an afterthought for the visitors, who were focused on individual improvement. By that standard the Jayettes had plenty of reason to smile all the way back to Perry.

Freshman Sophia McDevitt continues to shine for Perry. The varsity newcomer reset the school record in the 500 freestyle earlier this season, lowered it once, and then, Thursday, lowered it even further, establishing the new standard at 5 minutes, 46.29 seconds. Fellow Jayette Emily Dowd touched fifth in 7:17.95.

McDevitt also won the 100 backstroke, touching in 1:07.22, nicking .03 seconds off her previous best. Teammate Gracie Phillips was fifth in the race in 1:19.64.

Junior Jaylene Karolus was a double winner as well. She was first to the wall in the 200 individual medley (2:25.08) and in the 100 butterfly (1:03.36). Karolus set new personal marks in both events, lowering .74 seconds and .46, respectively.

Amanda Holwegner and Phillips were 2-5 in the 50 free in 28.04 and 31.29, respectively, with the former resetting her PB by .74 seconds. Zoe Hibbert and Rhylan Agan placed 3-5, in 1:05.35 and 1:35.13, in the 100 free, with Dowd (4th, 2:44.92) and Agan (5th, 3:26.99) in the 200 free. Holwegner also swam the 100 breaststoke, reaching the wall fourth in 1:24.26.

Phillips, Holwegner, McDevitt and Hibbert were second in the 200 medley relay with a clocking of 2:12.99, with McDevitt, Dowd, Hibbert and Karolus third in the 400 free relay in 4:19.19.

Karolus, Phillips, Holwegner, and Hibbert teamed to place third in the 200 free relay in 1:55.89. Karolus swam the lead leg, the only 50-meter stretch for which and official split time is kept. She finished her section in 25.98 seconds, dropping .84 ticks off her previous best at the 50 free, in a clocking that was only .01 seconds off Christine Dowd’s school mark set in 2000.

The next meet for Perry is Tuesday when Algona and Storm Lake are scheduled to visit the McCreary Community Building pool. Fans will not be allowed to attend.
