The late Tom Holmes will be honored at the sixth annual Memorial Golf Tournament that will be held Sunday, July 7 at the Perry Golf and Country Club. Each year the club honors the memory of a member who made a significant impact on the club and community.

Tom Holmes died on Jan. 20, 2018. He was a 1965 graduate of Perry High School. Tom proudly served our country as a member of the U.S. Air Force from 1966 to 1970. After his honorable discharge from military service, Tom began a 35-year career with the John Deere Co.

Tom always loved to collect tractors and enjoyed tinkering with cars. He was also very proud of his John Deere mowers. In retirement, he enjoyed mowing lawns in Perry, and he also enjoyed working at the Renshaw Farms in the fall.

Tommy, as many of his friends called him, was a longtime member of the Perry Golf and Country Club. He really enjoyed golfing with his friends, and he was a strong supporter of the club.

Tommy played in the golf league regularly and when he became a senior citizen, he enjoyed playing in the senior league. Many of his friends miss his after-the-round fellowship at the Perry Golf and Country Club.

Tommy always had a smile on his face and was a pleasure to be around. He was also a longtime member of the Perry Elks.

This year the Memorial Tournament will have two divisions for golfers. The Open division will be held as usual, with the top finishing golfers of 18 holes to play an additional nine holes to determine the champion.

For the first time, a senior division will also be held for golfers aged 60 years and older. These golfers will play only 18 holes and will play from the senior tees. Tommy would have loved to have been around for this format.

Jon Foster of Atlanta, Ga., a nephew of the late Jim Haas, won last year’s Memorial Tournament with a total score for 27 holes of 105 (72, 33). Any individual who would like to play in this year’s tournament should contact the clubhouse as soon as possible to enter by calling 515-465-3852.
