The Perry Volunteer Fire Department is staging a training burn Saturday at a house at 1819 Third St.

The volunteers are practicing a number of firefighting techniques under the leadership of PVFD Interim Fire Chief Grason Hill, including the simulated evacuations of an injured firefighter and an occupant victim.

A fog machine was used to fill the two-story, 103-year-old house with a smoke-like vapor in order to create the effects of interior conditions in a real house fire.

Perry City Council member Barb Wolling, in whose district the house is located, was on scene and said the simulated smoke exercise was very impressive.

“You can really see what it’s like for the firefighters in a real house fire,” Wolling said.

The exercises will continue into Saturday afternoon, with the volunteers practicing exterior firefighting techniques on the burning structure.
