A rousing selection of patriotic anthems, marches and meditations was performed by the Perry Community Band in Pattee Park Thursday evening in their final summer concert of 2016.

Patriotic hearts thrilled to famous marches by John Phillip Sousa and Iowa’s own Karl King.

First Baptist Church Pastor Chris Tjapkes brought his dog, Champ, to the performance, and both seemed thoroughly to enjoy the stirring sounds.

“God bless America,” Tjapkes said. “The band sounded wonderful tonight.”

His opinion was shared by Mavis Struyk of Perry, a loyal supporter of local culture and a regular at Perry Fine Arts performances.

The community concert band played “The Armed Forces March” by Michael Sweeney, “The Peacemaker March” by King and two Sousa marches, “The Washington Post March” and “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” which featured a piccolo solo by 2015 PHS grad Christian Loaiza.

The volunteer band, under the direction of Perry High School instrumental music instructor Brandon Weeks, practiced prior to each performance in the Perry High School band room.
