VAN METER — Woodward-Granger’s boys basketball team was denied their 10th win of the season Friday as host Van Meter suffocated the Hawk offense for a 53-29 WCAC victory.

Van Meter (10-0, 10-0) held W-G (9-3, 8-2) to well less than half the 67 points per game average in which they entered the contest, with 6-9 senior Ryan Schmitt a big reason why.

Schmitt finished with 19 points and seven rebounds and three assists. He also had two steals and two blocks and consistently interfered with the driving, penetration-style attack preferred by W-G.

The Hawks finished 12-of-43 from the field, sinking just 2-of-12 on 3-point shots. The Bulldogs, in contrast, were 22-of-39 from the floor and 6-of-11 beyond the arc.

Van Meter opened leads of 13-8 after one period and of 27-11 at the half, with an 11-2 spurt over the third frame putting the game on ice.

Anthony Potthoff added 13 for the hosts, with Spencer Lamb scoring nine points and grabbing five rebounds. Brett Berg had four points, Jackson Wilcox and Parker Fryar three apiece and Harrison Smith two points.

Noah Hoyt led W-G with 10 points, seven boards and three blocks, with Bryce Achenbach providing nine points and five rebounds. Kaya Bowlsby had five points, Reese Jamison three and Nick Buch two, with Jamison making five steals.

W-G continues WCAC play this week with a trip to West Central Valley Tuesday before hosting Ogden Friday.
