UPDATE: Body of missing Ottumwa woman found Sunday


The lifeless body of Helen Elizabeth Showalter, 60, of Ottumwa was found Sunday in the Des Moines River.

OTTUMWA, Iowa — The lifeless body of a missing Ottumwa woman was found Sunday afternoon in the Des Moines River near the Cliffland Boat Ramp in rural Wapello County, according to a statement issued Sunday night by the Ottumwa Police Department.

Helen Elizabeth Showalter, 60, of Ottumwa was reported missing Saturday. She was last seen near the Garrison Rock Park in rural Wapello County.

Law enforcement is treating Showalter’s death as suspicious, the statement said. The investigation is active, and no arrests have been made. Law enforcement said it believes there is no danger to the public at this time.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Iowa State Medical Examiner in Ankeny, the statement said.
