BOONE, Iowa — Boone County law enforcement is seeking a shooter who remains at large Thursday evening after shooting a man Thursday afternoon in Boone, according to a statement released about 6:30 p.m. by the Boone Police Department.

“The suspect is described as a heavy-set black male, wearing blue jeans and a white shirt,” the Boone Police said. “Should this subject be seen, citizens are advised not to confront the subject and to call 911 immediately.”

Police said a caller first reported a male threatening another male with a gun at 1:11 p.m. in the area of 13th and Carroll streets in Boone.

Boone Police and Boone County Sheriff’s Deputies responded and found “a male victim who had received a single, non-threatening gunshot wound,” according to the police statement.

According to police, the suspect gunman fled the scene on foot and was not apprehended, contrary to first reports.

The victim is reportedly an 18-year-old man. Police said he was given immediate medical aid. An earlier report said the gunshot victim was lifeflighted to an area hospital, but police have not confirmed this report.

Police said area schools were locked down during the active-shooter episode, and an officer or deputy was assigned to each school as a safety precaution until students could be released to parents.

Agents from the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation  are assisting in the ongoing investigation. The police said no additional information would be released at this time.
