An 11-year-old Grimes boy was killed Tuesday evening and a Grimes man was injured in a chain-reaction crash on U.S. Interstate 80.

An Iowa State Patrol crash report issued at 12:10 a.m. Wednesday originally indicated that Luis Venales Graterol, 42, of Grimes also died in the crash, but the report was later revised to show the sole fatality was Ian Venales, 11, of Grimes..

According to the report, Venles Graterol traveling eastbound on U.S. Interstate 80 about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and approaching the exit to E. 14th Street (U.S. Highway 69), where traffic was “backed up due to a collision.”

The young Venales was a passenger in Venales Graterol’s vehicle. He was transported to Blank Children’s Hospital by Saylorville EMS but died of his injuries. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
